Norhill Houston Real Estate Information

Norhill was originally planned and developed in the 1920s as an ideal working class neighborhood. Since then, Norhill hasn't undergone the modern infill development that other well-established areas around Houston have experienced.

Today the Norhill neighborhood has retained much of its original character, now highly sought after, with historic Craftsman bungalows and clean spacious yards.

Any new constructions that do pop up in Norhill tend to keep with the prevailing aesthetic. Yet these properties benefit from all of the modern luxury fittings one would expect.

Many of Norhill's older homes are highly revered as authentic examples of early 20th-century kit-built Craftsman homes. These homes boast vintage tile work, real wood floors, wrought iron details, and refurbished interiors.

The bungalows found throughout Norhill are characterized by their understated ornamentation, large porches, and sturdy columns. Other details include low-pitched and jerkinhead roofs, wood siding, and rich sylvan colors.

These home designs were immensely popular in the first part of the 20th-century, and their open plans and spacious porches were perfect for the hot, humid weather of the U.S. south. Particularly popular in working class communities, many of these homes were ordered as complete, pre-cut kits, made according to commercially available plans found in magazines.

Other styles on display in Norhill are American Foursquare, Prairie, various European cottages, and the odd building with Victorian details.

Although most properties in Norhill are small to medium-sized detached family homes, there are a number of duplexes as well.

Norhill Community Information

Norhill, Houston occupies most of the triangular area bounded by N Main, Pecore, and Studewood Streets. A small section of East 11th Street also extends along Norhill's southwestern edge.

Neighboring communities include Houston Heights, Woodland Heights, and Northside. Residents in Norhill enjoy quick access to the I-45, with downtown Houston reachable in approximately 10 minutes.

In 2000, Norhill was named a Historic District, one of the largest in Houston, by the city authorities and the Houston Archaeological and Historical Commission. The area's original plan by William C. Hogg made sure to incorporate park and green spaces, now evident in Norhill's much-loved esplanades and at Proctor Plaza Park.

A number of other parks are also a short distance from Norhill, like Moody Park, Woodland Park, and Montie Beach Park.

Norhill Schools

Students in Norhill are served by the Houston Independent School District. Local schools include Browning Elementary, Field Elementary, Hogg Middle, and Heights High School.

Field Elementary School is particularly highly rated, and Heights High School offers both an International Baccalaureate Programme and Advanced Placement courses.
