Set up as a trading post in 1826 and chartered in 1837, Montgomery is known as the birthplace of the Lone Star Flag of Texas. Although Historic Montgomery is only two square miles in size, people in the following large subdivisions call the Montgomery area home: April Sound, Bentwater, Buffalo Springs, Del Lago, Grand Harbor, and Walden.
The Montgomery real estate market features a variety of waterfront gated communities — all with golf courses, trails, and outdoor recreational possibilities. April Sound has a tennis facility with covered courts, Olympic-sized swimming pool, covered pavilion, basketball area, and playgrounds. Bentwater, one of the last major tracts of waterfront land to be developed on Lake Conroe, offers a Yacht Club and Marina, fitness club, day spa, more than 12.5 miles of shoreline, and two private islands. Grand Harbor, with large wooded lots inland or on Lake Conroe, has a pavilion with a grilling area, a 10-acre park, and a boat launch.
Buffalo Springs, a popular alternative to gated communities, is a planned development within the historic city of Montgomery. Buffalo Springs offers the ambience of a small countryside town, within walking distance of the city's stores and restaurants on small, quiet streets.
Other Montgomery subdivisions include Del Lago Resort and Country Club and Walden. Walden is a popular subdivision with a mixture of families, retirees, and weekenders. Among many other amenities, Walden offers a Yacht Club with an award-winning chef, a plaza with stones and giant flags memorializing Walden's past, spectacular lake views, one of the largest marinas, and swimming pools with life guards.
