Willis became a community after the Willis brothers donated their land in 1870 to the Great Northern Railroad. The track, running from Houston to Chicago, helped the City of Willis grow as trains began running through the community. Over the years, Willis has had many successful cash crops — one of the best being tobacco crops. After 100 years, the timber industry continues to play a role in the town's economic growth, and today, Willis is a rapidly growing community.
Set in a peaceful, rural area, Willis offers residents and visitors many things to do. Head to Lake Conroe to enjoy recreational activities such as fishing, swimming, water skiing, or jet skiing. Excellent marinas offer all the services you might need for your watercraft, or get away from it all in the rolling hills of the Sam Houston National Forest and Huntsville State Park. There you can take advantage of horse trails, hiking trails, and camping facilities. Adults and children alike look forward to stock car racing and western events such as roping, barrel racing, and mounted shooting.
The Willis Independent School District offers numerous accredited schools that cater to the needs of over 4000 students. Many students take advantage of nearby Lone Star College-Montgomery and Sam Houston State University.
Willis also offers low city and school taxes, neighborhood parks, a state-of-the-art community center, parks for youth sports, golf courses, a faith based community, restaurants, and concerts at the Mitchell Pavilion. Montgomery County Airport and a hospital are also nearby.
